Truth! Hip Hop, Spoken Word and Puppetry
Monday - Friday: 9AM – 3PM August 3rd - August 7th
Truth! is an original show that that tells the story of Sojourner Truth, a formerly enslaved person in Ulster County who became an outspoken advocate for abolition as well as civil and women’s rights in the nineteenth century. Using the art forms of hip hop, spoken word, music, and puppetry, participants will create original material that they will present in the performance of Truth! that is taking place on Saturday, August 8th. Please note that some extra rehearsal time will be added to the camp hours.
About Our Instructors
Lisa Brown: Dancing since the age of 5, Lisa and her father founded Unique Fitness in Kingston in 2002, later merging with the Center for Creative Education, where Lisa continues her work as a dance instructor and troupe leader. She is one of our dance teachers here at High Meadow and also teaches in our Enrichment Program.
Amy Trompetter: Amy is a puppeteer, trumpeter, World Theater historian, teacher & community organizer. She founded Redwing Blackbird Theater in the late ’90s as a workshop and performance space in the Hudson Valley. Her roots are in Bread & Puppet Theater in the 1960s in NYC. She has taught, directed & performed all over the globe. Amy taught as an Assistant Professor of Theater at Antioch (tenure), Bates, Bard & Barnard Colleges. For several years she taught as part of the Bard Prison Initiative.
Poet Gold: Poet is a published writer, spoken word performance artist, poet, and community “artivist.” She is an active member of the Arts Mid-Hudson and the “Arts & Community Action Group.” Her work is driven by the desire to triumph over personal challenges and the belief that everyone has greatness inside of them. In 2017 and 2018, she was named Poet Laureate of Dutchess County.
Carrie Wykoff: Carrie is the director of the Youth Arts program at The Rosendale Theatre. There she directed and produced the original production of Truth!, Savannah Stories, Outbounders and Dreamers, Free to Be You and Me, Schoolhouse Rock, and Dark Night/ New Light. Carrie has also worked with young people as a Girls on the Run coach and as the advisor for Destination Imagination and Earth clubs.
